Starlink works to prevent jamming measures near battlefields by focusing on improving cyber security. In a Tweet, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said several Starlink terminals had been blocked for several hours at a time. In response, Starlink’s latest software avoids jamming. Starlink is an important part of maintaining communication in Ukraine as the country experiences network outages. To ensure it can be used anywhere, Musk said SpaceX has reduced the terminal’s power consumption to only work with the cigarette lighter on regular vehicles. Some governments (not Ukraine) have asked Starlink to block news sources in Russia. We’ll just do it while the gun is pointed, ”Elon Musk tweeted.
On March 5, in a series of tweets, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the company was focusing on cyber defense and overcoming signal jamming amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine: Some Starlink terminals near conflict zones are blocked several hours at a time, ”Musk said.
This happened after the company’s broadband service was asked by some governments to block news sources in Russia.
The measures come a week after Musk responded to a request from Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the country’s digital transformation minister, to provide Starlink service to the country to ensure access in case Russia cuts off other lines. . Musk said on February 26 that the Starlink service had been activated in the country, and two days later, a first shipment of at least a few dozen Starlink terminals arrived in Ukraine.
Neither SpaceX nor Ukrainian government officials have disclosed the number of active Starlink terminals in the country. Musk tweeted on March 3 that SpaceX has made other software changes to reduce the device’s power consumption, allowing it to run a cigarette lighter in a car and allowing roaming in moving vehicles. .
Musk also claimed that Starlink is the only non-Russian communication system that still works in parts of Ukraine, so it is highly likely to be targeted. Also, Musk asked users to only activate Starlink when necessary and place the antenna as far away from people as possible and put light camouflage on the antenna to prevent visual detection.
Although some experts warn that Starlink terminals could be targeted by Russian forces, it is unclear if they have been. Additionally, in most of Ukraine, land mobile connectivity continues to work, as do satellite services such as Inmarsat and Iridium.
However, Viasat’s KA-SAT broadband satellite, which provides service in Ukraine and other parts of Europe, has suffered service delays since the raid began on February 24, which the company attributed to a cybernetic event.
The focus on cybersecurity and anti-jamming upgrades is a replacement for other company initiatives. SpaceX prioritized cyber defense and bypassed signal jamming. This will cause a slight delay in Starship and Starlink V2, Musk wrote. He did not specify the type of delays.
The Starlink V2 is the second generation of Starlink’s service, with its satellites designed to launch from Starship vehicles. SpaceX has released some details on the capabilities of these satellites. SpaceX makes Starship vehicles at its Boca Chica, Texas test site, called Starbase, but cannot test an orbital launch of the vehicle until it receives a license from the Federal Aviation Administration. That license, in turn, is contingent on the completion of an environmental assessment, which the FAA says will be conducted on March 28, a date that has been changed twice.
This change in resources, however, does not appear to affect other SpaceX initiatives, including the launch of additional current -generation Starlink satellites. SpaceX launched the range of 47 Starlink satellites on March 3 from the Kennedy Space Center, the third of such a launch in the past two weeks. Another Starlink satellite launch of Falcon 9 is scheduled no earlier than March 8 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
In response to Twitter users pointing out that Russian media is propaganda, Musk replied that he thinks all news sources are doing propaganda to some degree, and some are doing more than others. Also, Musk said Starlink will not block Russian news sources from its network other than at gunpoint, and added, “Sorry to be a completely free speech.” The European Union has tried to prevent Russian state -controlled broadcasters, such as Russia Today and Sputnik, from operating in its countries. This ban extends to Internet service providers as well as cable and satellite television companies.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke with SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk and announced that the country will receive more of its Starlink satellite internet terminals later this week:
I spoke of Elon Musk. I thank him for supporting Ukraine in word and deed. Next week we will receive another batch of Starlink systems for damaged cities. We discussed possible projects in space. But I will talk about it after the war.
What do you think were the decisions that Elon Musk made?
