startup Tiger eliminated the difficulty of the hybrid cloud

Completely reinventing the concept of cloud storage for client machines, as proposed by Tiger Technology, a startup of Bulgarian origin discovered by LeMagIt during the IT Press Tour, an event consisting of a presentation to the expert press of the most innovative storage players.

Instead of synchronizing a file on the PC with its cloud copy-as Box, iCloud and other Dropboxes do-Tiger Technology offers to store only a symbolic link on the PC. The interest? Collaborators working with large files no longer have to wait for the document to download.

“We connect any local directory to any online storage provider. You will then immediately see all the files stored in the cloud in this directory, as if they were stored on your PC, except that they are not really there. These are symbolic links, which do not consume capacity on your local disk. The advantage is that your data in the cloud becomes accessible to all traditional applications designed to open and save their documents on the hard disk ”, explains Alexander Lefterov, the founder of Tiger Technology.

The fragments we use are only temporarily available on the local disk

“Let’s take an example: you need to edit high-resolution video on your PC and your team shares it in the cloud. You usually have to download it in full, which is slow, takes up space on your disk, and multiplies even more competing versions. In our system, software like Adobe Premiere plays video directly from the cloud and all your edits are instantly transferred to the cloud. »

We may fear that this system adds a horrible latency every time we access a portion of the video due to communication between the PC and the online storage service that is done at the speed of an Internet connection. , slower than a local disk. Tiger Technology makes sure this is not the case.

“You’re actually working on your local disk, at the speed of your local disk. Our system downloads data between the cloud and your PC, but it only does it for the blocks of data you’re reading, writing , or editing. It doesn’t download the whole file, unlike synchronization services usually do “, Alexander Lefterov hints.

In detail, the software is configurable. The size of what it keeps locally and the duration of its retention are determined by the user in a set of rules. In addition, the software places a lock on cloud buckets containing the blocks in use, so that another collaborator cannot modify both segments of a video at the same time.

Tiger Technology’s software is also reported to have ransomware protection, though LeMagIT hasn’t fully figured out how it works. According to the answers provided by Alexander Lefterov, it is not possible for the malware to encrypt only fragments of the file stored locally. Also, some protection can prevent replacing a healthy online file with a completely corrupt local file anyway.

Create a hybrid cloud without investing in a migration project

Alexander Lefterov admits this: the Tiger system – that’s its name – only shows its full power in large files, large enough for their entire download to be rigorous. But Tiger Technology is not talking about so much power, but rather ease of use.

“Our goal is mainly to bring simplicity to a context where all companies must move to the cloud, but are afraid that it will interfere with the work of their employees.»

“Our goal is mainly to bring simplicity to a context where all companies must move to the cloud, but fear that it will interfere with the work of their employees”, advances Alexander Lefterov, explaining that these interruptions stem from the obligation from using the new cloud -enabled applications that need to specify URLs instead of navigating to local folders.

“Let’s take another example, your video surveillance. Under the guise of working in a hybrid cloud, providers sell so-called cloud-first applications that are no longer hybrid. In these solutions, the images from the cameras will be recorded in the cloud and they will be re-downloaded from the cloud to be displayed on the screens of the surveillance teams. This not only imposes a lag, but simply drops the internet connection so that the surveillance does not work. »

“With our solution, you preserve your historic video surveillance application: images are stored locally and displayed directly on local screens. But, in addition, as the images scroll, they are transferred to the cloud. So you’re a winner in the same number: video surveillance is instantaneous, independent of the vulnerability of your Internet connection and the photos are stored in the cloud, either for another team to monitor them remotely, or to keep them. in a regulatory manner without having to deploy large storage capacity in the area. »

In this case, Alexander Lefterov pointed out, the Tiger software was installed on the local NAS where the videos arrived.

“I didn’t take this example at random. We have a lot of CCTV clients. But also in medicine, in the media, because they’re both operating models,” he argues. And to add that some hosts are also using its solution to secure their NAS in the cloud, without having to invest in a project to modify the tools in the cloud.

Limited to Windows filesystems

Technically, Tiger does not use a database to index pieces of information between the local disk and the online service. The software works directly at the file system level, guaranteeing more optimized access than the competition. The other side of the coin is you need a version of Tiger per file system type. However, the publisher is far from supporting them all.

“Currently, we only support Windows file systems, such as NTFS and ReFS.»

Alexander LefterovFounder of Tiger Technology

“In fact, we are currently only compatible with the Windows file system, in this case NTFS and ReFS. We have not yet offered versions for Linux filesystems, as we felt that Linux was not a priority over workstations. However, we are thinking about it, because the NAS or local systems that drive connected objects run on Linux, ”Alexander Lefterov acknowledges.

“Our real problem is instead compatibility with macOS, which is widely used in the video editing industry. Like all other providers, we stumble upon the latest OS developments, which are completely Apple has locked its file system. macOS literally prevents you from manipulating symbolic links, from accessing blocks. »

Tiger Technology isn’t the only one experiencing new barriers posed by Apple. Elsewhere, Carbon Copy Cloner backup software can no longer generate a bootable copy of the Mac’s internal disk.
