QNAP – Backup NAS Data to the Cloud

The benefits of owning a NAS are many. However, it is also important to plan for the worst. Many users (blindly) trust their NAS to store and secure their data. However, the question must be asked: what happens if the latter breaks or disappears? We don’t ask that of anyone, however, accidents happen every day. Here we will give some hints of backup, synchronization ideas and see together how to back up data from your NAS to a Cloud.

Backup 3-2-1 and QNAP NAS

In business, many IT managers implement a 3 – 2 – 1 backup strategy. In detail, it is a question of having:

  • even 3 copies of data ;
  • sa 2 brackets different ;
  • wherein 1 off -site backup.

Let us divide these three elements. 3 copies of the same document, this is first of all the document on the workstation itself (1st copy). Then you have to have 2 more copies in a different place. We recommend having one of the easily accessible copiess (in the same place), for example on a NAS. Finally, you will need to have a final off -site copy. The latter can be done in a Cloud.

Important: RAID is not a backup and a NAS cannot be considered a copy … even if there are multiple backups on different disks/volumes.

QNAP HBS 3 and cloud backup

QNAP has the advantage of offering several remote backup solutions. Too long to detail everything here, but we’ll focus on the QNAP tool Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS for short). It can be used on all NAS from the manufacturer. It is easy to handle and above all very powerful. As its name suggests, HBS can be used for backup (backup) or synchronization (sync).

Backup vs Sync

As a reminder, backup and a synchronization are 2 different things … even if they are close. However, they do not have the same goal:

  • Ang file backup is a copy made safe, with the intent of restoration;
  • Ang file synchronization is the correspondence between two different storage media.

Synchronization is usually done in real time. Once there is a change to a file, synchronization will begin so that each media has the same version “immediately”. The backup should be regular, but it does not require immediate. Also, backup tasks generally have more options than synchronization (compression, encryption, deduplication, etc.).

Hybrid Backup Sync

Hybrid Backup Sync 3 is easy to install fromApplication centerr. It is compatible with all QNAP NAS. From its launch, the user is accompanied by the discovery tool. If the tool is easy to handle, it has many functions. HBS 3 can work in the clouds for the general public (e.g. Dropbox) or for companies (e.g. Amazon Glacier).

If we are going to proceed with the backup, we should start by going to the menu Backup and Restore then click the button Make and select New backup task. There, you will be asked to select source folders present on your NAS. These are the folders (with files and subfolders) that will be backed up.

This choice is not final. Even after finalizing a backup task, it is quite possible to change it (selecting/deleting folder and changing options). When the selection is made, you click on the button following. You will be asked to select the cloud service you want to backup.

It already exists 35 different departments : Amazon, Blackbaze, Box, Digital Ocean, Dropbox, Google Cloud Storage and Drive, IBM, Ionos, OneDrive and OneDrive Enterprise, Oracle, OVH, SFR, etc. It is also possible to make backups to another NAS server from the same manufacturer or use generic protocols such as WebDAV and S3 (very practical). Without leaving HBS, you will authenticate to the selected Cloud service and you will be able to grant NAS rights. Next, you will create a new cloud storage location (destination folder) for the backup.

After selecting the destination folder, you will name this backup task. Of course, you can add a description (optional). Then you press the button following.

In this new screen, you do plan this backup task (when will it be performed?). It can be automatic or manual. For a task, you can schedule several executions: several times a day, several days of the week, monthly, etc. For example, it is possible to indicate that your backup should be done every 30 minutes. You can set up to 30 schedules per backup job.

On the left side, you have access to the other menus: Version management at Checks data integrity. They are very important and should not be ignored.

HBS3 Versioning - QNAP - Backup your NAS data to the Cloud

First of all, the version management (English version) lets you specify how many different versions of a file should be backed up to the cloud. QNAP offers a maximum of 65,536 different versions. Without exceeding, it can be interesting to have at least 7 versions of the same file saved, if you make a backup in a day. QNAP also offers smart version management: number of versions per hour, day, week and month.

Ang integrity evaluation is also very important. In fact, it lets you check if the backup took place correctly and there is no data corruption after the task has been performed. HBS also offers several options. Don’t skip this option and check your backups at least once a week if you’re an individual … and once a day for a company. Making a backup is a necessity, make sure it can be restored better.

HBS3 Filters - QNAP - Backup your NAS data to the Cloud

We hit the button following… The tool offers us other functions such as the possibility of filter files that you do not want to back up (e.g. system files, large files, files after the date, etc.). You can also use data compression before sending to the Cloud to make the backup less cumbersome. Default option QuDedup is enabled, it is a deduplication process to save used space. We recommend that you leave this enabled by default.

HBS3 policies - QNAP - Backs up your NAS data to the Cloud

On the same screen, from the menu The rules on the left, you will be able to activate data encryption on the NAS before it is sent to the Cloud. This is important if you want to implement a robust security policy vis-à-vis your cloud provider. We won’t detail all the options here, they are too many: transmission speed, TCP BBR, QuWan integration, data corruption, maintenance features, etc. Finally, you still have the final menu Choices for managing notifications (successes and errors), error handling rules, etc.

Press the button one last time following to access the task summary. If everything is OK, all you have to do is click on the button Make. We assure you, it is possible to come back later to change the backup task (folders and options). Your task will now appear on the main screen Backup and Restore. Finished.

Backup, backup, backup

Having a NAS offers many benefits to businesses and individuals. However, this is not an inviolable safe. No one is safe from damage, virus, fire, theft, or any other catastrophe. We encourage you to take a few minutes to review your data, your backups or how to improve your strategy. What happens if your NAS goes missing overnight? How many hours or days will it take to recover your files? How are your virtual machines or Docker containers? The same questions you can ask yourself for your cloud service. What happens if it stops working or is unavailable for some time? What is the risk if your data stored in the Cloud is corrupted?

Bonuses

A piece of information that should be of interest to companies is also possible to back up their Cloud to a NAS. If, for example, you have a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) offer, you can back up your data from these clouds to the NAS. The tool is called QNAP Boxafe, it allows you to back up files, emails, calendars and contacts from Google and Microsoft to your QNAP NAS, through a very comprehensive interface.
