What is an MBA?
the Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the highest level of international business management training. Small general point to better understand the main features.
The MBA: an overview
Historically generally (although MBAs are now comprised), the main purpose of this training was to provide participants with a technical profile (salespeople, lawyers, engineers, scientists, etc.) with management skills and a global perspective of the company, to advance their access to management positions.
Therefore, deepen all management skills: management, accounting, taxation, law, finance, languages, etc.all are in the context of multilingualism and multiculturalism.
Regardless of the place of study, teaching is done there, for the most part, in English, students as well as groups of teachers representing different nationalities. Internationally in essence, the diploma has thus gained, in a context of economic globalization, a very strong popularity. This is of particular interest to companies looking for flexible executives in different world markets.
MBA: Beware of names!
It’s a perfect fit distinguish true MBAs from “MBA” designations. associated with diplomas that should, in fact, be called “Master”.
While the The MBA should be reserved for people who already have some professional experiencesome schools use this name (not protected) to bring “international” color to training intended for students at bac + 4 or bac + 5 level with no experience.
This acronym is also used, in some specific cases, to highlight a course for which the Conference of Grandes Ecoles does not associate the label “Specialized Master” …
Who are MBAs for?
Born in the United States in Business Schools, the MBA was first intended for engineers who wanted to access management positions. It focuses on anyone with a technical profile (salespeople, lawyers, engineers, scientists, etc.) and wants to build or relaunch their career. Their dual skills (technical and managerial) can be worthwhile, after an MBA, in the job market …
Technical profiles that justify at least 3 years of professional experience
Therefore, the idea is, in general, to open management positions to people with completely different initial training. And this, after only a few years (at least 3 years) of professional experience in their field.
Based primarily on the exchange of experiences, MBA training is less interested in a student who has just graduated … who, moreover, in most cases, will not be allowed to follow it.
As for holders of diplomas from Business Schools, some believe that an MBA can open new doors for them. Others, however, think that MBA training, especially in its general version, won’t take them much compared to their initial training: no dual skill can be advanced … unless you choose one to the many specialized MBAs currently in progress! In other words, it is up to each to form their own opinion.
An international practice
International training if any, it is usually, regardless of the place of study, provided in English. Beware of those who do not master Shakespeare’s language: the program is demanding and there is no room for difficulties in understanding or expressing at the linguistic level!
Close to the reality of companies, the MBA aims to train direct operational executives. The instruction provided is therefore very practical, concrete and empirical. Students primarily learn techniques and behaviors.
The study is mainly developed from case studies or business projects: participants are placed in the position of manager or consultant. They should review each case and develop action plans, which are then presented to all students. Lectures, if any, are becoming rare … It is not only the teacher here who possesses knowledge: everyone brings their experience and is enriched by others. Meanwhile, the teacher frames, directs, advises.
And since it is a question of reproducing real work situations, subjects are often, as in business, treated in groups! It’s a question of showing – or acquiring – the qualities essential to any business leader: diplomacy, a sense of human relationships … and strength of belief. The active participation of each student is required: presentation of case studies, constructive reactions to other groups, etc.
A difficult exercise
In the MBA, the investment of time is important, and it is better to know it.
We prepare courses upstream, we avoid falling under the weight of reading, we keep pace with global economic activity, we invest in one (or more) association (s) and we choose carefully meetings in which we participate because there are many requests …
To stay, you need to know how to find information, organize it and get to the point quickly.
