Hydro-Québec: “The goal is not to get more money out of the world’s pockets”

The demand for green electricity is growing and Hydro-Québec is at the point of change. Renovations of dams, new wind projects, measures to prevent waste, Hydro-Québec boss Sophie Brochu, has revealed her plan in the game, but the goal is not “to find more money in the pockets of the world.

“Hydro-Québec is coming at a very important moment, much like it was in the early 80s when we moved from oil to electricity and electric baseboards. (…) It is quite similar to the situation where we see ourselves today ”, explained Ms. Brochu in an interview with Newspaper.

“It’s time for us to continue a great collective chat in Quebec on the future of our power supplies,” he continued.

These key discussions were also used to develop the 2022-2026 Hydro-Québec strategic plan filed today by the CAQ government.

The latter wants to lower its GHG emissions and more than 100 terawatt hours of clean electricity will be needed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, more than half of Hydro’s current capacity.

“We know we have a problem with greenhouse gas, it’s leading to climate change and that’s why we need to make an energy shift. We have clean electricity and suddenly, this amount is rising in importance”, explanation of the manager.

Increasing production

In the context of decarbonization, demand for electricity will increase in the coming years, especially in the domestic market with electric vehicles and major industrial projects as well as for export markets, specifically in the Northeast of the United States. .

“Since I arrived, I have seen that excess capacity (Editor’s note: surpluses) is more restricted”, Mako leaflet.

Hydro-Québec will therefore increase its production by 5,000 mw over the next few years. The state company will specifically launch renovation work on the existing dams (2000 mw) and on its infrastructure, which will involve costs of $ 5 billion over the next four years.

Hydro-Québec is also evaluating new wind power projects to acquire an additional 3,000 mw. Calls for tenders have been launched in recent months.

The state company, however, warns that the total cost of electricity purchases will gradually increase and “will put upward pressure on rates”, without however detailing this increase.

There is still space on the bus

But the state corporation will rely heavily on energy efficiency. In other words, we want Quebecers to diversify their consumption and avoid wasting energy. By 2029, Hydro wants to get approximately 8.2 TWh in savings, which roughly represents the New York contract.

“I will give you the image of a bus, we will call it the electricity consumption bus in Quebec. There were many of us inside, but not all the benches were occupied. We put our suitcases and our coats on the banks. But there are others who want to ride, ”she said.

“The question we have to ask ourselves is, are we going to make another bus, or are we going to take our coats and suitcases for someone else?” he asked himself.

Mako Brochu also believes it is necessary to “do better in energy efficiency”, but the goal is not to increase the bill to get there.

“The objective we are pursuing, don’t get me wrong, is not to get more money from the pockets of the world, that’s not it. Meaning for the same energy charge, can people consume at a better time of day than others? ”, He explains.

In its plan, Hydro also wants to add 4,500 standard charging stations to urban centers by 2028 and run 2,500 more faster by 2030. The state-owned company also wants customers to interact with network and they can produce their own electricity, especially in the batteries of electric vehicles.

The state-owned company is also committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its activities by 2030.
