Hydro-Québec: “The goal is not to get more money out of the world’s pockets”

The demand for green electricity is growing and Hydro-Québec is at the point of change. Renovation of the dam, new wind projects, measures to prevent waste: the boss of Hydro-Québec Sophie Brochu, showed his game plan, but the goal is not to “get more money on pockets of the world.

“Hydro-Québec is coming at an important moment, very similar to it in the early 80s, when we moved from oil to electricity and electric baseboards. […] Somewhat similar to the situation we have now, “said Mr.ako Brochu in an interview with The newspaper.

“It’s time for us to continue a great collective chat, in Quebec, on the future of our power supplies,” he continued.

These key discussions were also used to develop Hydro-Québec’s 2022-2026 strategic plan, now filed by the CAQ government.

The latter wanted to reduce GHG emissions, and more than 100 terawatt hours of clean electricity, more than half of the current capacity of hydro, the need to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.

“We know that we have a problem with greenhouse gases, it is leading to climate change and that’s why we need to make the transfer of energy. We have clean electricity and, suddenly, the amount increases in importance,” explains the manager.

Increasing production

In the context of decarbonization, increases the demand for electricity in the coming years, particularly in the domestic market, with electric vehicles and large industrial projects, and in the export market, for example in the North East. American.

“Since I arrived, I can see the extra capacity [les surplus] are becoming more stringent, “said Ms.ako leaflet.

Hydro-Québec will therefore increase its production by 5,000 MW over the next few years. The state company is particularly launching a work adjustment to current dam (2,000 MW) and the infrastructure, that would cost 5 billion dollars over the next four years.

Hydro-Québec is also evaluating new wind power projects to generate an additional 3,000 MW. The tender was launched in recent months.

The state company warned that the total cost of electricity purchases would gradually increase and “put upward pressure on bills”, without detailing this increase.

There is space on the bus

But the state corporation will focus on energy efficiency. In other words, we want Quebecers to diversify their consumption and avoid wasting energy. By 2029, Hydro wants to get approximately 8.2 TWh in savings, which roughly represents the New York contract.

“I will give you a picture of a bus. We will call this “bus consumption of electricity in Quebec.” Many of us on the inside, but not all of the bench is occupied. We placed our suitcases and our coat banks. But some want to ride, “she said.

“The question you have to ask yourself: are we going to make another bus or are we going to take our coats and suitcases for the rest?” he continued.

Mako Brochu also believes it is necessary to “do better in energy efficiency”, but the goal is not to increase the bill to get there.

“The objective we are pursuing, don’t get me wrong, is not to get more money from the pockets of the world, that’s not it. Meaning: for the same energy charge, people can consume on [un] best moment [de la] day? “he explained.

In its plan, Hydro would also add 4,500 standard charging stations in urban centers in 2028 and 2500 run faster when other 2030 also wants companies owned by the state that the customer will be contacted in the network and that they can produce their own electricity, in particular in the batteries of electric vehicles.

The state-owned company is also committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its activities by 2030.
